Let me start by saying I have never done art therapy before and I am not artistic, in the sense that I can hardly draw a straight line. But I love the idea of using crayons, paints, pencils and other materials to express myself creatively.
So I attended the Art Therapy for Women workshop without a clue as to what it would be like or what we would be asked to do. I just knew I was going to try it.
We sat in a circle and all shared our names, where we were from and if we had experienced Art Therapy before.
We then took a piece of paper and found our spot in the room where we felt we wanted to sit and create.
Krysta, the art therapy teacher gently guided us into our body and as we slowly began to connect with it she asked us to close our eyes and draw the outline of our human body on the paper.
For me this shape was not literal, meaning the hands and feet, trunk of the body and head but more aura like.
Then she asked us to feel into our body on a deeper level, recognize if there was any tension or pain we were holding onto, identify where in the body that was and then using a colour to draw it or highlight it in our own way on the ‘human body’ we had drawn.
After working with that for about 10 minutes she talked us through looking at our image, feeling ourselves and seeing how we could develop this human figure.
We spent about 40 minutes expressing what that human body meant to us, how we saw it, how we would like it to evolve, how it represented us and how our personality could shine through that initial figure.
I worked on it, in a more esoteric level, unblocking feminine energy in my womb by using pink colours, different colour wool and opening my energy and aura more for healing.
I felt blocked and unable to proceed many times but I took my time and slowly developed it in a way that was mine.
After the break we spent time observing each others work and we closed the circle by each of us sharing what our image was about while listening to others feedback on what they thought it was.
It was all very nurturing and the atmosphere in the room was very warm and inviting for each to voice and share comfortably.
We finished off by realising common themes in our work like healing, energy, happiness, and most of all how we shared common experiences and needs and how we are not alone in the journey of life.
If you would like to join our next Art Therapy for Women class it is on Saturday April 6th at 11am.
